The past two years have made shipping a lucrative business. According to Sea-Intelligence's March 22, 2022 press release, global shipping companies achieved an unprecedented operating profit of more than $110 billion. "In short, the industry tripled its operating profit in fiscal 2021 compared to the past decade." 


In 2021, shipping companies are investing heavily in expanding their fleets and increasing container volumes to ensure as much demand as possible. From an EBIT perspective, Maersk, the largest shipping company, will have an average EBIT per TEU shipped in 2021 of more than $686, while Israel-based ZIM will have the highest EBIT/TEU shipped in 2021 at $1,671 US.

Italian-Swiss international shipping company Mediterranean Shg Co has a record number of orders for 2021-2022, overtaking Maersk in January 2022 to become the largest container shipping company and will maintain its position with an additional capacity of 1.6 M TEU on the existing order book of 4.5 M TEU. ZIM has also upgraded its fleet from 0.4 M TEU in 2021 to the current 0.5 M TEU in July 2022. with new orders placed, the Israeli shipping company is aiming for a significant increase in TEUs, which could move it to #9 in the top 10 container shipping companies.


The top 10 shipping companies added 1.1 M TEU to their fleets. From June 2021 to date, total TEU capacity on the three main routes - Transatlantic, Trans-Pacific and Feast Europe - has increased by 8%, with capacity on the Trans-Pacific route increasing by 16%.
