On March 22, the Suez Canal Authority (SCA) announced a temporary adjustment to the transit vessel surcharge rates, effective May 1. The tariffs apply to container ships, tankers, dry bulk carriers, multipurpose cargo ships, ro-ro vessels and other types of vessels.

The SCA explained that the tariffs were adjusted to "keep pace with the significant growth in global trade, the development of the Suez Canal waterway, and the increasing level of transit services.

However, the SCA also stressed that these surcharges are temporary and will be modified or eliminated depending on market conditions.

Under the latest tariff proposal, SCA has adjusted the surcharge rates for container tiers on the open deck of container ships.

Specifically, the surcharge levied on southbound container ships passing through the Suez Canal will be adjusted to 5% to 39% of the ordinary tolls. The surcharge for northbound container ships passing through the Suez Canal will be adjusted to 9% to 57% of the ordinary tolls.

In addition, the surcharge levied on crude oil tankers transiting in both directions is adjusted to 15% of the ordinary tolls.

The surcharge imposed on product tankers in transit in both directions is adjusted to 15% of the ordinary toll.

The surcharge levied on dry bulk carriers transiting in both directions is adjusted to 10% of the general tolls.

The surcharge levied on LPG vessels in transit in both directions is adjusted to 20% of the general tolls.

The surcharge levied on chemical vessels and other liquid bulk carriers in transit in both directions is adjusted to 20% of the general tolls.

The surcharge levied on general cargo ships and multi-purpose vessels in transit in both directions is adjusted to 14% of the general tolls.

The surcharge levied on ro-ro vessels transiting in both directions is adjusted to 14% of the ordinary toll.

It is worth noting that SAC has already increased the tolls for most vessel types by 5% to 10% since March 1.

Previously, the Suez Canal Authority (SCA) started the widening of the southern section of the canal due to the grounding of the vessel "Chang Chi". But SCA Chairman Osama Rabie said in February this year: "The cost of widening the entire waterway is too high."
