Middle East Conflict Triggers Business Slump for Chinese Exporters

The escalating Middle East conflict has sent a shockwave through global supply chains, hitting Chinese exporters hard. Factories have paused production, new orders are suspended, and overseas exhibitions are canceled. For manufacturers reliant on the once-booming Middle East market, the business downturn has been abrupt and severe.

Production Halts: Inventory Runs Dry, Orders Stall

“We’ve stopped shipments and paused all new orders,” Che Yunwen, a pet product manufacturer, told Yicai. While his client base has few Middle Eastern partners, the conflict-driven oil and raw material price swings have forced the factory to halt production. Inventory can only last until late March, with existing stock reserved for pre-Spring Festival clients. New quotes are useless—fabric prices change hourly. Raw material costs have surged 40% in March, wiping out profits. If prices don’t stabilize, Che must raise client prices.

Zhejiang-based exporter Ding Yandong, whose core market is the Middle East, reports a complete freeze on new orders. “It’s not just logistics; raw material costs are the killer,” he said. Pre-holiday inventory piles up, and buyers wait. Suzhou fabric boss Wu Changming echoes the chill: large orders can’t be quoted, and factories only handle existing or small short-term orders to stay operational.

Exhibits Axed: Market Expansion Grinds to a Halt

March–May Middle East exhibitions are canceled or postponed. A June Dubai event faces 400 pre-registered firms, while December shows in Dubai and Saudi Arabia are set to launch. Many exhibitors switch to Vietnam or Poland instead. “Some firms are pausing Middle East expansion entirely,” said exhibition rep Xu Yiran, noting a flood of transfer requests.

Adapt or Bust: Stockpiling & Southeast Asia Shifts

Yiwu’s Wang Xiaonan stays calm, having stocked up pre-Spring Festival and again after conflict news. Inventory lasts until June, allowing stable new orders. Middle Eastern clients are still flying to Yiwu in April. Fujian ceramic exporter Liu Min shifts inventory to Southeast Asia for trial sales.

Policy & Shipping Headwinds

Container shipping rates rise 14.9%; Persian Gulf routes are volatile. China cancels export tax rebates for 249 products (April 1), hitting margins. But 24 government departments launch trade facilitation measures to stabilize foreign trade.
