Container shipping is the most convenient and efficient mode of global transportation today. However, frequent maritime accidents caused by misdeclared or undeclared dangerous goods have become a serious industry issue. Many shipping lines have introduced high penalties to promote self-regulation, with the only goal of ensuring vessel and cargo safety and protecting customer interests.
Relying only on penalties and post-accident reviews is far from enough. In every step of cargo production, warehousing, booking, packing and delivery, practitioners including shippers and forwarders must have a clear understanding of SOLAS, IMDG Code regulations and the characteristics of the goods being transported.
You can minimize risks by checking MSDS to understand cargo properties. MSDS stands for Material Safety Data Sheet, also known as a chemical safety information card internationally. It is a document issued by chemical manufacturers and importers, clarifying physical and chemical properties (pH, flash point, flammability, reactivity) and potential health hazards (carcinogenicity, teratogenicity).
A complete MSDS includes 16 mandatory sections. You should confirm all required information before submission.

MSDS is valid for 3 years from the issue date
All 16 sections must be fully completed (except “Other Information”)
The composition in Section 2 or 3 must be 100% complete
UN No. and Class in Section 14 indicate dangerous goods
The manufacturer name on MSDS must match the transport test report; explain the relationship if inconsistent
Alkaline battery
Zn-Mn battery
Carbon-Zinc battery
General dry battery
Lithium batteries: Acceptable as general cargo only with MSDS and compliance with IMDG Code SP188
Lead-acid batteries: Acceptable as general cargo only with MSDS and compliance with IMDG Code SP238
Ni-MH batteries: MSDS and packaging photos required to confirm eligibility as general cargo
Understanding MSDS and battery classification is vital for safe container shipping. Only with correct loading arrangement can you ensure safe and compliant cargo delivery.
