CMA CGM Group, a global leader in sea, air and logistics solutions, has joined with Alibaba's Cainiao Logistics, a global industrial Internet company, to provide smart containers and clean energy liquefied natural gas services for Cainiao.
For the first time, 20 smart dry cargo containers were carried on the CMA CGM TENERE LNG-powered container ship, which departed from Yantian Port in China in June and arrived at the Port of Los Angeles in early July. Thereafter, Cainiao will be responsible for local customs clearance and ground transportation to its overseas warehouse in the United States (operated jointly by Cainiao and 4PX) for storage and "last mile" delivery. Cainiao took the lead in using the CMA CGM Group's clean energy liquefied natural gas service, and joined hands with CMA CGM to take actions to reduce the carbon footprint of cargo transportation. The Clean Energy LNG service is part of CMA CGM's ACT with CMA CGM+, which gives customers greater control over their environmental performance.
CMA CGM's smart container solution is a permanent high-tech device developed based on IOT (Internet of Things). Cainiao will enjoy this innovative solution to achieve end-to-end visibility of its supply chain and operational excellence throughout the entire cargo transportation process. Smart containers provide near real-time data that can be accessed anytime, anywhere. Cainiao serves SMEs with the ability to track and monitor the GPS location, movement and outside temperature of cargo through the container dashboard.
CMA CGM Group is committed to using BETTER WAYS to provide more sustainable shipping and logistics services, constantly adapting to customer needs. In this regard, CMA CGM has accelerated the digitization of shipping and logistics by investing in the development of IoT, artificial intelligence and blockchain solutions, developing smarter and safer service offerings, while providing customers and employees with a smoother user experience. One of its digital solutions is the CMA CGM Group start-up incubator and accelerator ZEBOX, founded by Rudolf Sade in 2018, focusing on transport, logistics, mobility solutions and Industry 4.0.
In order to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2050, CMA CGM and Cainiao have jointly committed to lead the energy transformation of the industry. Cainiao took the lead in choosing clean energy liquefied natural gas services, which can reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 25% in the entire value chain and avoid 99% of air pollution emissions. Since last year, Cainiao and CMA CGM have joined hands to choose clean energy liquefied natural gas services on the China-Europe route, and are committed to jointly promoting the green and sustainable development of the freight industry. In the first quarter of 2022, Cainiao reduced 156 tons of CO2, equivalent to 25% of the carbon footprint of 561 TEUs, using clean energy LNG services through CMA CGM's "e-methane" fleet.
In 2017, CMA CGM Group chose to invest in LNG dual-fuel ships, which can greatly reduce the emission of air pollutants. This is the first step for the CMA CGM Group to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The engines installed on these ships are already compatible with BioLNG (derived from biomethane, which reduces CO2 emissions by 67%, or synthetic methane including e-methane). The CMA CGM Group has developed a decarbonization strategy, expanding investments and building partnerships to deliver increasingly innovative solutions. CMA CGM's "E-Methane" fleet currently has 29 vessels in service and will reach 77 by 2026.
Ludovic RENOU, CEO of CMA CGM China, said: "The customer-centric philosophy is deeply rooted in CMA CGM's DNA. Understanding customers and anticipating their needs are our key drivers every day. Through cooperation with strategic partner Cainiao , the CMA CGM Group will break new ground on the road to digitalization and decarbonization. Both companies share the same vision to use the best digital technologies available as a powerful driving force to transform the transportation of goods in the future. Through this partnership, Both parties also share the responsibility to achieve a sustainable future and go one step further in building a more environmentally respectful transportation industry.”
Zhao Jian, general manager of Cainiao International Supply Chain, said: "In the context of the growing demand for Chinese cross-border commodities in the European and American markets, we took the lead in using CMA CGM's smart containers and clean energy liquefied natural gas. A major step forward on the road to a digitized global freight network. We will work together with CMA CGM to help the world move through a one-stop, end-to-end digital freight supply chain and logistics solution.”
