CMA CGM Group, a global leader in sea, air and logistics solutions, has joined with Alibaba's Cainiao Logistics, a global industrial Internet company, to provide smart containers and clean energy liquefied natural gas services for Cainiao.
For the first time, 20 smart dry cargo containers were carried on the CMA CGM TENERE LNG-powered container ship, which departed from Yantian Port in China in June and arrived at the Port of Los Angeles in early July. Thereafter, Cainiao will be responsible for local customs clearance and ground transportation to its overseas warehouse in the United States (operated jointly by Cainiao and 4PX) for storage and "last mile" delivery. Cainiao took the lead in using the CMA CGM Group's clean energy liquefied natural gas service, and joined hands with CMA CGM to take actions to reduce the carbon footprint of cargo transportation. The Clean Energy LNG service is part of CMA CGM's ACT with CMA CGM+, which gives customers greater control over their environmental performance.
CMA CGM's smart container solution is a permanent high-tech device developed based on IOT (Internet of Things). Cainiao will enjoy this innovative solution to achieve end-to-end visibility of its supply chain and operational excellence throughout the entire cargo transportation process. Smart containers provide near real-time data that can be accessed anytime, anywhere. Cainiao serves SMEs with the ability to track and monitor the GPS location, movement and outside temperature of cargo through the container dashboard.

Cainiao took the lead in choosing clean energy liquefied natural gas services, which can reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 25% in the entire value chain and avoid 99% of air pollution emissions. Since last year, Cainiao and CMA CGM have joined hands to choose clean energy liquefied natural gas services on the China-Europe route, and are committed to jointly promoting the green and sustainable development of the freight industry. In the first quarter of 2022, Cainiao reduced 156 tons of CO2, equivalent to 25% of the carbon footprint of 561 TEUs, using clean energy LNG services through CMA CGM's "e-methane" fleet.
In 2017, CMA CGM Group chose to invest in LNG dual-fuel ships, which can greatly reduce the emission of air pollutants. This is the first step for the CMA CGM Group to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The engines installed on these ships are already compatible with BioLNG (derived from biomethane, which reduces CO2 emissions by 67%, or synthetic methane including e-methane). The CMA CGM Group has developed a decarbonization strategy, expanding investments and building partnerships to deliver increasingly innovative solutions. CMA CGM's "E-Methane" fleet currently has 29 vessels in service and will reach 77 by 2026.
