Chile has declared a “State of Catastrophe” as large-scale wildfires spread rapidly across its southern regions. Concurrently, severe maritime conditions along the coast have compounded impacts on port operations, triggering disruption risks.

Impact on Port Operations

The wildfires have severely damaged transportation infrastructure, with port operations varying by region:
  1. Severely Affected Areas: Lirquén Port has completely ceased operations; San Vicente and Talcahuano Ports remain operational but under restrictions, leading to reduced efficiency.

  2. Northern Ports: Mejillones’ Angamos Terminal is restricted due to high waves, while Arica, Iquique, Antofagasta, and Coquimbo Ports operate normally.

  3. Central Ports: Valparaíso Port faces operational limitations from swells, while San Antonio Port remains unaffected by weather.

  4. Other Ports: Coronel and Punta Arenas Ports report normal operations.

Recovery Uncertainties

Firefighting efforts are underway, but strong winds and high temperatures hinder containment. The recovery of port operations and inland transportation remains uncertain.

Logistics Advisory for Shippers & Forwarders

  1. Monitor Updates: Track official port announcements and shipping line notices for real-time operational status and schedule changes.

  2. Strengthen Communication: Maintain close contact with local agents and partners to assess risks promptly.

  3. Adjust Logistics Plans: Flexibly modify shipping strategies, optimize pre-shipment planning, and establish contingency measures to mitigate potential delays.
