Trump Announces New Tariffs on 22 Countries, with Brazil Facing Highest Rate of 50%

  1. Two Waves of Tariff Letters:

    • 20%: Philippines

    • 25%: Brunei, Moldova

    • 30%: Algeria, Iraq, Libya, Sri Lanka

    • 50%: Brazil.

    • 25%: Japan, South Korea, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Tunisia

    • 30%: South Africa, Bosnia and Herzegovina

    • 32%: Indonesia

    • 35%: Bangladesh, Serbia

    • 36%: Thailand, Cambodia

    • 40%: Laos, Myanmar.

    • First Wave (July 7): Trump sent letters to 14 countries, imposing tariffs ranging from 25% to 40%, effective August 1, 2025.

    • Second Wave (July 9): Additional 8 countries were targeted, with Brazil facing the highest rate of 50%.

    • President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva rejected the tariff as "unfair," citing $410 billion in U.S. trade surplus with Brazil over 15 years .

    • Brazil may retaliate using its Reciprocity Law, potentially imposing 50% tariffs on U.S. goods.

    • Trump’s 50% tariff on Brazil is linked to political tensions, including Brazil’s prosecution of former President Jair Bolsonaro, which Trump called a "political witch hunt" .
