China’s Foreign Trade Container Volume Up 13.7% YoY in First Two Months; Port Cargo Throughput Hits 2.87 Billion Tons

In the first two months of this year, China’s port sector achieved a strong start to the year. According to the latest data from the Ministry of Transport, national ports handled 2.87 billion tons of cargo from January to February, up 7.2% year on year.

Container throughput reached 58.77 million TEUs, a year-on-year increase of 9.8%. Among them, foreign trade container throughput rose by 13.7% year on year. Despite a complex and volatile external environment, China’s foreign trade logistics has demonstrated strong resilience.

Since the beginning of 2026, China’s transport sector has maintained a solid overall performance, with major indicators growing rapidly.

Freight Transport

Freight growth remained robust. In the first two months, China’s commercial freight volume totaled 8.30 billion tons, up 6.5% year on year. Port cargo throughput stood at 2.87 billion tons, up 7.2% year on year, with key freight indicators all expanding at a fast pace.

Passenger Mobility

Cross-regional travel remained strong, with the Spring Festival travel rush setting a new record. From January to February, China’s cross-regional passenger trips reached 12.38 billion, averaging 210 million per day.

During the Spring Festival travel period alone, cross-regional trips hit 9.41 billion, up 4.3% from the same period in 2025, reaching a record high for the period.

Transport Investment

Transport investment maintained a high level. In the first two months, China’s fixed-asset investment in transport totaled 355.8 billion yuan, of which 272.9 billion yuan went to highway and waterway projects.

Investment in expressways, ordinary national and provincial roads, and rural roads reached 138.3 billion yuan, 55.2 billion yuan, and 30.7 billion yuan respectively.
