The global ranking of the top ten container ports has welcomed a new contender. In 2024, Port Klang achieved a record-breaking throughput of 14.64 million TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units), marking a 4.1% year-on-year increase. This milestone positions the Malaysian port to potentially enter the global top ten for the first time, reflecting its growing significance in international trade.
Strengthening Malaysia’s Maritime Position
Alongside Port Klang, Malaysia’s Tanjung Pelepas Port also contributed significantly, handling 12.25 million TEUs in 2023. Combined, Malaysia’s total container throughput reached 30.68 million TEUs, underscoring the nation’s rising prominence in global shipping. Port Klang’s strategic focus on balancing transshipment and import-export activities has given it a competitive edge, with plans to increase the share of import-export containers to 50% in the coming years.
Expansion to Meet Future Demand
To sustain its growth trajectory, Port Klang has embarked on an ambitious expansion plan. West Port, which currently handles 14 million TEUs, is nearing its capacity limit with an 80% utilization rate. The “Phase 2” expansion project will extend the wharf by 4.8 kilometers and add eight new berths, with the first phase expected to be completed by 2043. Once fully operational, the expanded facility will increase West Port’s capacity by 13 million TEUs, ensuring it can meet demand for the next 10 to 15 years.
This development not only solidifies Port Klang’s position as a key player in global shipping but also highlights Malaysia’s growing influence in the maritime industry.
