Sea Shipping from Shenzhen China to Houston USA – FCL & LCL Rates, Transit Time & Quotes | STU Supply Chain
Product Description
Quick answer: We run weekly FCL and LCL sailings from Shenzhen (Yantian / Shekou) and other South China ports to Houston, TX — the largest container port on the U.S. Gulf Coast. Choose direct all-water service via the Panama Canal (28–35 days port to port) or via Los Angeles/Long Beach with inland rail (22–30 days door to door). Every quote includes export customs clearance in China, ISF 10+2 and AMS filing, U.S. customs clearance with a licensed broker and customs bond, and truck delivery across Greater Houston and Texas. STU Supply Chain is an FMC-licensed ocean transportation intermediary (FMC No. 030310) and licensed NVOCC (MOC-NV09192).
Houston is not a generic U.S. destination port. It is the gateway for the U.S. South and Midwest: cargo released at Houston moves inland by rail to Dallas, Atlanta and Chicago, which makes it the shortest route for consignees in Texas, the Southeast and the Central U.S. This page explains the two routings, realistic transit times, container selection, what a DDP quote does and does not include, and how the Port of Houston's two container terminals affect your delivery schedule.
Transit Time: Shenzhen to Houston
| Routing | Port-to-Port | Door-to-Door (typical) |
|---|---|---|
| Direct all-water to Houston (Panama Canal) | 28–35 days | 32–40 days |
| Via LA/LB + rail to Houston | 15–18 days + rail | 22–30 days |
| LCL consolidation | 30–38 days | 35–45 days |
How the door-to-door number is built: 1–2 days for factory pickup and drayage to port in South China, 2–5 days for U.S. customs release, then 2–5 days for local delivery in the Greater Houston area. If your cargo continues inland by rail to Dallas, Atlanta or Chicago, add a 7–15 day buffer — inland rail capacity tightens in the August–October peak season. When booking, always confirm the estimated sailing date (ETD) and estimated arrival (ETA), not just "about a month".

20GP or 40HQ? Matching the Box to Your Cargo
Dense, heavy cargo — auto parts, tiles, stone, hardware — usually hits the 20GP weight limit (about 25 tons) long before it fills 28 CBM, so a bigger box means paying ocean freight on air. Light, bulky cargo — furniture, home appliances, decor — fills a 40HQ's 68 CBM first and is far cheaper per CBM. First-time shippers often book the biggest container by default and end up with a half-empty 40HQ. Send us your packing list (cartons, weights, dimensions) before booking and we will run a stowage plan and tell you which box actually fits.
LCL Shipping from Shenzhen to Houston
For shipments under 15 CBM, weekly LCL consolidation from Yantian and Shekou cuts cost dramatically: indicative USD $45–75 per CBM (minimum 1 CBM), including origin handling. Destination THC and final delivery are quoted upfront — no surprise fees at Houston. LCL transit is 30–38 days port to port and 35–45 days door to door. Below 1 CBM, express or air freight is usually more economical than LCL.
DDP Shipping to Houston: What the Price Includes — and What It Doesn't
Our all-in DDP (Delivered Duty Paid) service to Houston covers: ocean freight, export customs declaration in China, U.S. customs clearance with bond, duty and tax payment under DDP, and final truck delivery to any Texas address, including Amazon fulfillment centers. Before you book, get the boundary in writing — these four items are normally billed at actual cost and are where "cheap DDP" quotes turn expensive:
Customs exam fees (VACIS / intensive exam) if CBP pulls the container;
Demurrage — container sitting at the terminal past free time;
Detention — returning the empty box late;
Overweight surcharges on the road leg.
One more Houston-specific point: many Texas warehouses and all Amazon FCs require a delivery appointment number. Appointments should be requested before the vessel arrives — booking one after customs release often means waiting a week or more while the container burns demurrage at the terminal. We schedule appointments as soon as the booking is confirmed, not after arrival.
Port of Houston: Terminals, Rail & Direct Carriers from China
The Port of Houston — the Houston Ship Channel complex of 200+ private terminals and 8 public terminals — is the largest U.S. port by waterborne tonnage (over 200 million tons a year, 7,000+ vessel calls annually) and handles roughly 73% of all container traffic on the U.S. Gulf Coast. By TEU count it ranks fifth among U.S. container ports. It was also the first U.S. port certified to ISO environmental management standards.
Containerized cargo from China calls at two terminals, both in the Bayport / Barbours Cut complex with direct highway access to SR 146 and SR 225:
| Terminal | Direct carriers from South China | Berths / Yard | Inland connections |
|---|---|---|---|
| Barbours Cut (La Porte) | EMC, OOCL | 6 berths / 300 acres, 29 truck gates | On-dock rail served by Union Pacific and BNSF, 8,000+ ft of working tracks to off-dock warehouses |
| Bayport | EMC, ZIM, Yang Ming, CMA CGM, HMM, Hapag-Lloyd, MSC, ONE | 5 berths (2 more due 2027) / 314 acres | EDI container tracking; highway access via SR 146 / SR 225 |
Why this matters to your transit time: after release, Houston-bound containers move inland on Union Pacific and BNSF rail to Dallas, Atlanta, Chicago and the wider South and Midwest. That rail leg is the reason Houston beats West Coast routings for southern and central consignees — and the reason it needs a 7–15 day buffer in peak season.
Houston or West Coast? Choosing the Right U.S. Gateway
Consignee in Texas, the Southeast or the Central U.S. (Dallas, Houston metro, Atlanta, Chicago): Houston all-water or via-rail routings avoid the cross-country rail leg from the West Coast and are usually cheaper and more predictable.
Consignee in California or the Pacific Northwest: LA/Long Beach is faster — Houston would mean a redundant Gulf arrival plus inland haul back west.
Not sure? Send the delivery ZIP code with your inquiry. We compare both routings on total landed cost and door-to-door days before you commit to a port.

What is the minimum size for LCL shipping to Houston?
From 1 CBM, at USD $45–75 per CBM including origin handling. Below 1 CBM, express or air freight is usually more economical.
Do you handle U.S. customs clearance in Houston?
Yes. ISF 10+2 and AMS filing, customs bond and clearance through our licensed broker are included in every quote; DDP door delivery with duty payment is available.
What does DDP to Houston include — and what can add cost later?
DDP includes ocean freight, China export clearance, U.S. clearance and bond, duties and taxes, and final delivery. Customs exam fees, demurrage, detention and overweight surcharges are billed at actual cost — we list them in writing before booking so the landed cost is predictable.
Should I book a 20GP or a 40HQ?
Dense, heavy cargo (auto parts, building materials) fits a 20GP's 25-ton limit first; light, bulky cargo (furniture, appliances) is cheaper per CBM in a 40HQ's 68 CBM. Send your packing list and we will run a free stowage plan before booking.
Can you deliver to Amazon FBA warehouses in Texas?
Yes — FCL and LCL to all Houston-area and Texas fulfillment centers, with delivery appointments requested before the vessel arrives so the container never waits on a booking slot.
Is Houston actually faster than LA/LB for my address?
For Texas, the Southeast and Central U.S. (Dallas, Atlanta, Chicago), usually yes — you skip the cross-country rail leg. For West Coast addresses, LA/LB is faster. Send the delivery ZIP and we will price both routings side by side.
