The new route will make its maiden flight on April 27.

In the context of severe congestion at the two major transshipment ports of Colombo and Singapore, Mediterranean Shipping (MSC) has decided to open a new direct route "Bengal Service" from South China to Chittagong.

In a statement, MSC said: “The new route will provide customers with direct services between southern China and Chittagong. In addition, the route will also be supported by MSC’s transshipment hubs in Singapore and Tanjung Pelepas. Import and export business in Bangladesh.”

It is reported that the new route will start its inaugural flight on April 27, with weekly operations. The port sequence of calls is: Hong Kong-Yantian-Shekou-Singapore-Tanjung Pelepas-Chittagong-Singapore-Tanjong Pelepas-Hong Kong .

MSC said the new route is expected to alleviate transshipment delays for Bangladeshi importers and reduce shipping costs.

It is understood that under normal circumstances, containers shipped by MSC to Chittagong will be transported to Chittagong by feeder ships at transshipment ports such as Singapore, Colombo and Tanjung Pelepas.

However, the Port of Colombo is currently facing serious congestion, and the containers to be transshipped need to wait 25 days before they can board the feeder ship bound for Chittagong Port. For transshipment in Singapore, it also takes nearly 15 days.

Bangladesh is the world's second-largest garment exporter and imports most of its raw materials from China. These raw materials need to be delivered to the factory in time to meet the needs of the European and American markets.
